Thistles, Wilmot to meet in West Division semifinals

FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles will play the Wilmot Wild in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League’s West Division semifinals.

While the Thistles completed their sweep of the Halton Hills Bulldogs in the best-of-three divisional quarter-final Wednesday at Georgetown, the Wild finished their sweep of the Mimico Mountaineers Saturday afternoon at Mimico.

The Wild defeated Mimico 13-5 in both games.

The Thistles will get home-court advantage in the best-of-five divisional semifinal although both teams finished the regular season with 11-5-0 records. Fergus won the tie-breaker due to goal differential in the meetings with the Wild.

The Thistles defeated the Wild 11-7 at Fergus June 10 while the Wild defeated the Thistles 11-10 in overtime at Baden June 25.

During the regular season, the Wild scored 15 more goals than Fergus and allowed 12 fewer goals.

The Thistles had 12 players collect 20 points or more during the regular season. Dean Sealey led with 38 goals and 33 assists while Scott Stovel had 28 goals and 31 assists and Adam Lantz had six goals and 53 assists. The others were Mitchell Daw (7 goals-29 assists), Mitchell Bernier (14-18), Jayden Bushy (16-11 in 8 games), McCaiden Dixon (15-10) and Trent Spear (5-15 in 2 games).

Bill Wilson had a 6-4-0 record and 8.41 goals-against average in 10 games in the Fergus net while Owen Bratton was 5-1-0 and 8.89 in 7 games.

The Wild had seven players reach the 20-point plateau led by Braiden Kerbs with 41 goals and 20 assists, Ryan Maksymyk with 22 goals and 30 assists and Tyler Verutis with 28 goals and 23 assists. The others were Luke Finoro (14-30), Tyler Nagy (17-26), Hayden Berger (11-17) and Matt Wyman (11-16).

Andrew Chenier had a 6-4-0 record and 7.10 goals-against average in 11 games in the Wilmot net while Reyd Fitton was 5-1-0 and 8.74 in 9 games.

The Thistles and Wild have met twice before in the playoffs and Wilmot swept both series. The Wild won the best-of-five West Division final 3-0 last year and a best-of-three West Division quarter-final 2-0 in 2013.

This year’s series between the teams is to start Tuesday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex. Game time is 8 p.m.

Game 2 is set for Thursday at the Wilmot Recreation Complex, also starting at 8 p.m.

The third game is to go in Fergus July 16 at 7 p.m.

If a fourth game is required, it’s to be played at Baden July 19 at 8 p.m.

If needed, the fifth game is to be played in Fergus July 20 beginning at 8 p.m.

The other West Division semifinal pits the first-place Six Nations Warriors against the fourth-place Brantford Warriors.

The East Division semifinals match the first-place Clarington Shamrox against the fourth-place Whitby Warriors and the second-place Peterborough Lakers against the third-place Cornwall Celtics.

Clarington had a bye in the first round while all other series finished in two-game sweeps.
