Thistles work overtime to open West final with win

FERGUS – It was expected to be a tight series and the first game of the best-of-five affair turned out to live up to that billing.

Dean Sealey’s goal in the fifth minute of the second overtime period lifted the Fergus Thistles to a 9-8 victory over the Brantford Warriors in the opening game of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League’s West Division final Thursday night at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

Sealey fired a shot home from in front of the Brantford net that the Warriors disputed, claiming Sealey was in the crease when he scored. However, the referees ruled the goal was legal.

That goal completed a hat trick for Sealey while Mitchell Bernier scored twice for the Thistles and Jayden Bushy, Mitchell Daw, McCaiden Dixon and Trent Spear added single goals. Scott Stovel had five assists while Adam Lantz had four, Brett Harrison two and Bernier, Sealey and Jonah White one apiece.

Jayden Drage had a hat trick for Brantford while Ty Argent scored twice. Chipping in with single goals were Austin Giles, Sam Gower and Jacob Parkinson. Cole Robillard set up five goals while Drage, Connor Merritt and Caleb Wells each had two assists and Parkinson had one.

The game was close throughout with neither team able to establish a lead of more than a goal. It was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period, 5-5 after the second and 7-7 after regulation time. The teams scored once apiece in a 10-minute overtime period before Sealey netted the winner in the second overtime period, a 10-minute sudden death period.

Brantford goalkeeper Lucas Nagy was the busier of the netminders as he faced 54 shots. Bill Wilson in the Fergus net stopped 28 shots including a penalty shot in the second period.

Second game of the series is set for Saturday at Brantford’s Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex. Game time is 7 p.m.

Third game is to be played Monday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex starting at 8 p.m.

The winner advances to the best-of-seven Meredith Cup championship series against the winner of the East Division final between the defending league champion Clarington Shamrox and the 2015 champion Peterborough Lakers. That series is to start Saturday afternoon in Bowmanville.
