Three from D4/10 in CWOSSA A/AA girls’ rugby tourney

GUELPH – Three teams from the District 4/10 high schools girls’ rugby league are to compete in the CWOSSA A/AA championship tournament at Eastview Park that is to start Wednesday.

Teams in the tournament from the local league are the host Erin Raiders, Bishop Macdonell Celtics and the Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest.

Erin finished the regular season fourth in the nine-team league at 4-2-0 while Bishop Mac was sixth at 2-3-1 and Wellington Heights eighth at 1-5-0. Erin was ousted from the A semifinals by the eventual champion Ross Royals while both Bishop Mac and Wellington Heights suffered losses in the B semifinals.

The D4/10 teams are to be joined in the CWOSSA tournament by Grey Highlands Lions of Flesherton, St. Mary’s Mustangs of Owen Sound, Paris Panthers, Galt Ghosts and Holy Trinity Titans of Simcoe.

St. Mary’s finished the regular season in the Bluewater league (D1/7) at 2-1-0 while Grey Highlands was at 1-2-0. Paris was 2-3-0 in the Brant County league (D5), Galt was 5-0-1 in the Waterloo County league (D6/11) and Holy Trinity was 3-0-0 in the Norfolk league (D9).

The tournament is to use two of the fields at Eastview Park. Wednesday at 10 a.m., Bishop Mac is to play Galt while Paris is to battle St. Mary’s. The other first-round games are set for 11 a.m. with Erin set to play Holy Trinity and Wellington Heights to take on Grey Highlands.

All teams advance to the quarter-finals that are slated for 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Quarter-final victors gains berths in Friday’s semifinals that are set for 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Semifinal winners move on to the 1:30 p.m. championship match.

The CWOSSA champion will gain a berth in the provincial OFSAA A/AA championship tournament to be held at Stratford June 4 to 6.
