Toronto keeps Gryphon hoops men winless

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons continue to look for their first win of the OUA men’s basketball season following a 99-92 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday at the University of Toronto’s Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

The Gryphs have lost all four of their league outings this season.

Saturday, they were close to the Varsity Blues each quarter but never held the lead at the end of a quarter. Toronto was up 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, 45-42 at halftime and 74-70 at the end of the third quarter.

Banky Alade hit for 26 points for the Gryphs while Malcolm Glanville had 25 and Tommy Yanchus added 17. Alade grabbed 11 rebounds while Rasheed Weekes had nine. Glanville had three assists while Weekes and Craig Valeriote each had two steals and Valeriote also had two blocks.

Evan Shadkami led Toronto with 22 points while Daniel Johansson and Christopher Barrett each had 15, Nikola Paradina had 13 and Inaki Alvarez had 10. Paradina pulled down five rebounds and Johansson had five assists and two blocks.

While the Gryphs are at 0-4, the Varsity Blues are at 2-1.

Next up for the Gryphs are away games against the Queen’s Gaels (1-2) Friday at 8 p.m. and York Lions (1-2) Saturday at 8 p.m.
