Toropchenko helps Storm get first win

GUELPH – Alexey Toropchenko’s three-point outing helped the Guelph Storm edge the Oshawa Generals 5-4 Friday night at the Sleeman Centre for their first win of the OHL season.

A pair of goals by Toropchenko about two and a half minutes apart late in the second period broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Storm a lead they protected to the end.

The Generals scored first, but the Storm led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second.

Toropchenko finished with two goals and an assist while Garrett McFadden, Liam Stevens and Isaac Ratcliffe also scored. Ryan Merkley and Cam Hillis each had two assists while Ratcliffe, Mason Primeau, Nick Deakin-Poot and Dmitri Samorukov had one apiece.

Nick Wong and Danil Antropov each scored twice for Oshawa. Assists were awarded to Kyle MacLean, Mason Kohn, Allan McShane, Renars Krastenbergs, Jack Studnicka, Matt Brassard and Serron Noel.

Anthony Popovich made 36 saves in the Guelph net for the win. Logan Gauthier took the loss for Oshawa. He started, but was replaced for the first eight and a half minutes of the second period by Kyle Keyser before going back in the net. Gauthier and Keyser faced 22 shots.

The result leaves the Storm at 1-1-0-1 and Oshawa at 2-2-0-0.
