Two U Sports standards, eight medals for Gryphs at York Open

TORONTO — Two Guelph Gryphons achieved U Sports standards in their events on the first day of the two-day 46th annual York Open at York’s Toronto Track and Field Centre.

Gryphons getting their national university standards were Ashley Connell in women’s shot put and Greg MacNeill in men’s 60-metre hurdles. Both won their events.

Connell won the women’s shot put with a best throw of 14.77 metres. All six of her throws were over the U Sports standard of 13.61m.

MacNeill won the men’s 60m hurdles in 8.14 seconds, a shade under the U Sports standard of 8.18 seconds. Teammate Jackson Cheung was third in 8.50 seconds.

The Gryphs finished the first day of the meet with two gold, two silver and four bronze.

Kelsey Serviss won silver in the women’s 3,000 metres as she finished the distance in 10:22.64. Kayla Gallo of Lakehead won in 10:18.70.

Hailey Hitchings was runner-up in the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.70 seconds while teammate Emma Nero was third in 8.79 seconds. Mikeisha Bobb of York won in 8.65 seconds.

Jade Peters was third in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.10 metres. Caroline Ehrhardt of London Western won at 12.96m.

Gryphon Emily Bowerman, a Guelph native, was the bronze medalist in women’s indoor pentathlon as she collected a total of 3,028 points. Madeline Rampton of Western won with 3,265.

The meet is to conclude Saturday.
