U.S. trio head Canadian Women’s Amateur field

GUELPH – A trio of U.S. golfers hold down the top three spots in Golf Canada’s Women’s Amateur championship at Cutten Fields at the tournament’s halfway point.

Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster, Col., and Lilia Kha-Tu Vu of Fountain Valley, Calif., were tied atop the leaderboard at 5-under 135 following the second round Wednesday.

Kha-Tu Vu fired a 64 on the par-70 Cutten Fields course to erase the six-stroke deficit she had to first-round leader Kupcho at the beginning of their Wednesday rounds.

Rachel Heck of Memphis is a stroke back in third after shooting 66 Wednesday.

While three players had rounds below par in Tuesday’s opening round, five were below par Wednesday led by 19-year-old Maria Fassi of Mexico who shot a course record 62 to vault herself from in danger of missing the cut to sixth place.

None of the international golfers are eligible to win the Canadian amateur title.

Leading that field is Susan Xiao of Surrey, B.C., who is fourth overall at 137. She’s five strokes ahead of the deadlocked duo of Naomi Ko of Victoria, B.C., and Grace St-Germain of Orleans, Ont.

Both Guelphites missed the cut despite shooting better rounds Wednesday.

Rachel Pollock, a three-time women’s club champion at Cutten Fields, shot a 78 Wednesday to finish at 159. The low 70 were at 153 or lower.

Reigning club champion Katie McTaggart recorded an 82 to finish at 172 in her first Women’s Amateur.

Both Pollock and McTaggart are former District 10 high school champions.

Stephanie Tucker, a D10 champion from Orangeville, also had a better second round, but missed the cut. She had a 79 Wednesday to finish at 162.

Reigning Cutten Fields junior girls’ champion Kristen Giles of Georgetown survived the cut. She finished her first round with an ace on her final hole and shot 78 in the second round to stand at 151.

Four-time Women’s Amateur champion Mary Ann Hayward of St. Thomas, a former Cutten Fields member, also made it through to the third round. She fired 74 Wednesday for a two-round total of 150.

Of the 70 remaining in the tournament, 22 are eligible to be crowned the Canadian champion.

There are 30 from the U.S. left in the tournament as well as three each from

China and Colombia, two each from Australia, Mexico and Thailand and one each from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, Nigeria and Philippines.

First group is scheduled on the first tee at 7:30 a.m. Thursday while the leaders are to go at 9:31 a.m.
