U16 AA Predators open Guelph tournament with win

GUELPH – The host Guelph Predators struck for a 5-2 victory in the U16 AA class Thursday at the West End arena in the opening game of the annual Guelph Ringette Association tournament.

The Predators scored twice in the first period on their way to the win.

Rilee Devries led the locals with a pair of goals while Lauren Bilton, Hanna Hutton and Julia Mezenberg also scored. Lauren Bilton and Mezenberg each had two assists while Bronte Bilton and Jaden Hounsell had one apiece.

Rylin Cormier and Tessa Williams scored for Waterloo.

The game was the lone game of the tournament played Thursday. It kicks into high gear Friday.

The tournament has attracted 79 teams for play in 13 divisions – U8, U9, U10, U14 R, U14 A, U14 AA, U16 R, U16 A, U16 AA, U19 A, U19 AA, 18+ A and 18+ B. There’s also a pair of Guelph U7 teams playing each other in exhibition tilts.

The host Predators are represented in each category except U16 R and 18+ A. The University of Guelph Gryphons are in 18+ A while the Elora-Fergus Edge are in U14 A and U16 R.

The tournament has also attracted several out-of-province teams. Nova Scotia provincial teams are entered in U19 A and U19 AA while a team representing Regina is also in U19 AA. There are also a total of five Manitoba teams in the tournament with Bonivital, Magic and Winnipeg in U16 AA and Eastman and Magic in U19 AA.

Other Ontario teams in the tournament represent Ajax, Burlington, Caledonia, Cambridge, Carleton University, Chatham, City of Ottawa, Dorchester, Forest, Goderich, Halton, Kingston, Kitchener, London, Metcalfe, Mississauga, Mitchell, Oshawa, Richmond Hill, Sault Ste. Marie, St. Thomas, Sudbury, Timmins, Valley East, Waterloo, West Ferris and Whitby.

A total of seven arenas will also be used during the tournament. The Elora and District Community Centre and the Hespeler Arena will host games on Friday while the Gryphon Centre will host games Friday and Sunday. Exhibition arena, Centennial arena, Victoria Road arena and West End arena will host games all three days of the weekend.

Three of the arenas will be the site of championship games. The U14 R final is to be played at Centennial arena Sunday morning while the Victoria Road arena is to host the U16AA, U19AA and U14AA finals Sunday afternoon. The U9, U19A, 18+A, U16R, U14A, U10, U16A and 18+B finals are to be played at the West End arena Sunday.
