Undefeated Orangeville Bears clinch first in boys hockey

ORANGEVILLE – The Orangeville Bears remained undefeated in the District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey league and secured a first-place finish in the process as they won twice Tuesday.

Postponements meant the Bears were in a position where they needed to play back-to-back home games against the Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston and their Orangeville rival Westside Thunder at the Tony Rose arena.

The Bears blanked Norwell 5-0 and then defeated Westside 4-1 to clinch a finish atop the 10-team league. Orangeville is to wrap up its regular season Wednesday with a game at Shelburne against the Centre Dufferin Royals.

Orangeville has won all nine of its D4/10 games while the Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus are assured of a second-place finish as they finished their regular season at 8-1-1-0.

The Erin Raiders are to play Norwell at Palmerston Wednesday in the only other game left on the regular-season schedule. Erin is assured of a third-place finish as the Raiders are at 5-1-0-3.

They are followed by the St. James Lions at 5-4-1-0, Ross Royals at 5-4-0-1, Centre Dufferin at 4-3-2-0, Westside at 4-5-2-0, Centennial Spartans at 2-8-0-0, Norwell at 2-7-0-0 and Bishop Macdonell Celtics at 1-8-1-0.

In other games this week, the St. James Lions tied Centre Dufferin 3-3 Tuesday after downing Bishop Mac 9-4 Monday and Ross dropped Centennial 6-1 Tuesday.

The Ross-Centennial game was the only one that had scoring details reported.

Nick Mainprize had two goals and two assists for Ross while Aiden Morten-Ferguson had two goals and one assist. Kyle Cabeldu collected a goal and an assist while Noah Magnus also scored. Getting one assist apiece were Jacob Caldwell, Liam Weir, Pius Gristey and Patrick Nyman.

Brodie Goodchild scored for Centennial while Cooper Page had an assist.
