University Challenge Cup ringette tourney starts Wednesday
GUELPH – A total of 14 teams are to participate in this week’s University Challenge Cup ringette tournament at the University of Guelph’s Gryphon Centre.
The tournament has attracted 10 Tier 1 teams and four in Tier 2.
The Tier 1 squads have been divided into two pools with the host Guelph Gryphons in Pool A along with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Calgary Dinos, Northern Alberta Ooks and Dalhousie Tigers.
Pool B consists of the Western Mustangs, Lethbridge Pronghorns, Carleton Ravens, Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders On.
Slated to compete in Tier 2 are the Laurier Golden Hawks, McMaster Marauders Two, Nipissing Lakers and Trent Excalibur.
Play is to start Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at the gold rink. The Gryphs are to play Dalhousie at 12:30 p.m. at the gold rink.
Thursday’s schedule also starts at 7:30 a.m. at the gold rink with the Gryphs slated to play Ottawa at that time. The hosts are also to play Northern Alberta at 12:30 p.m.
Pool play is to wrap up Thursday morning. The Gryphs are t play Calgary Thursday at 8:45 p.m. at the gold rink.
Following the preliminary rounds, the last-place team in each of the two Tier 1 pools are dropped into Tier 2 with one of them going into Pool J with the top two Tier 2 teams and the other going into Pool K with the bottom two Tier 2 teams.
The remaining teams in Pool A are renamed Pool E while the remaining teams in Pool B are renamed Pool F.
Playoff pool play continues until Saturday afternoon with the start of the final playoff round. The eight teams in Tier 1 are ranked 1 through 8 based on combined results from both the preliminary round and playoff pool play. The six teams in Tier 2 are ranked 1 through 6 on results from playoff pool play.
The final playoff round is to start Saturday and wrap up Sunday with medal games to be played at the Gryphon Centre. First games Sunday are to be played at Centennial, Victoria Road and Exhibition arenas in Guelph.
Tier 1 gold-medal game is scheduled for 11:55 a.m. and the Tier 2 gold-medal game is to go at 2:45 p.m.
