Varsity Junior Gryphs out of playoff race
WATERLOO – The Guelph Varsity Junior Gryphons saw their playoff hopes come to an end Saturday when they were handed a 24-15 setback by the Cambridge Lions at University Stadium.
The loss was the fifth in a row for the Junior Gryphs. Their lone win came in their season opener against the Durham Dolphins.
The setback also means they can finish no higher than fifth in the West Division. Top four teams qualify for the playoffs.
The Lions surged in the fourth quarter for the win. After a scoreless first quarter, the teams were tied 7-7 at halftime and 14-14 after the third quarter.
Quarterback Dakota Brown completed 16 of 35 pass attempts for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
Keontae King and Clark Barnes each caught a touchdown pass. King caught three passes for 108 yards while Barnes hauled down four for 60 yards and Tommy Nield caught five for 45 yards.
Juwan Jeffrey carried the ball eight times for 23 yards while Brown ran four times for 19 yards.
Barnes returned three punts for eight yards and Niel returned one for eight yards. Andre Gordon returned two kickoffs for nine yards while Dawson Elliott returned one for 10 yards.
Eric Stranz converted both touchdowns and also kicked 10 punts for 390 yards.
On defence, Brandon Ferigo and Joshua Vanamelsvoort each had eight tackles while Naol Denko, Garrison Pyle and Trevon Halstead had seven apiece. Pyle had a sack.
The Junior Gryphs are to play the London Junior Mustangs (6-0-0) at London Friday at 7 p.m.
The Junior Varsity Junior Gryphons were also knocked out of the playoff race with a 45-10 loss to the Cambridge Lions Saturday at Waterloo’s University Stadium.
The Junior Gryphs have lost all six of their games.
Cambridge led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter, 27-7 at halftime and 34-7 after the third quarter.
Quarterback Daniel Bown completed 16 of 30 pass attempts for 162 yards and a touchdown for the Junior Gryphs while Peyton Garvin completed two of five for 14 yards. Neither was intercepted.
Hadi El-Miari caught 10 passes for 82 yards while Cory Pryce caught five for 54 yards and the touchdown and Drake Davis caught one for 25 yards.
Brown was the leading rusher with two carries for 31 yards while Kyle Ilczyma had three carries for two yards.
Davis returned four punts for 40 yards and a kickoff for 26 yards. Thomas Ness returned two punts for 17 yards and a kickoff for 16 yards.
Ben Lane kicked a field goal, converted the touchdown and had seven punts for 212 yards.
Luis Alfieri had 10 tackles for the locals while Enzo Njo had seven and Andrew Riley had six. Njo also had a sack.
The Junior Gryphs are to play the London Junior Mustangs (1-5-0) at London Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Bantam Junior Gryphons were doubled 14-7 by the Toronto Jets in league play Saturday at Brebeuf College.
Game details were not reported.
The result leaves the Junior Gryphs at 3-2-0 while the Jets are undefeated at 6-0-0.
The Junior Gryphs have a bye on the holiday weekend and are to play the Clarington Knights at Clarington July 8 at noon.
