Varsity Reds hockey boys down Bears to remain unbeaten

PALMERSTON – The Norwell Varsity Reds established themselves as contenders in the District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey league with a 5-2 win over the defending champion Orangeville Bears Wednesday at the Palmerston arena.

The win was the third in as many outings for the Varsity Reds, giving them as many wins this season as they had in the previous two seasons combined. Norwell went 2-7-1 last season and 1-9-1 in 2015-16.

For Orangeville, the loss was their first in regular-season play since they dropped the final game of league play in the ’15-16 to the Centre Wellington Falcons Jan. 19, 2016. They’d won 12 in a row since then – all 10 last season and two to start this season.

Luke Cowen, Cody Camm, Parker Miller, Caleb Cribbin and Brodie Hoffele each scored for Norwell while Hoffele, Dylan Richardson, Isaiah Thornback and Nole Black each had an assist.

Kyle Waters had a goal and an assist for Orangeville while Dakota Zarundy scored the other goal and Ben Neuman had an assist.

Norwell and the Erin Raiders lead the league at 3-0-0 while the Centre Wellington Falcons are at 2-0-0 and Orangeville’s at 2-1-0.

Centre Wellington is to host Erin Thursday afternoon.
