Visitors wrap up regular season with senior volleyball wins

GUELPH – Thursday was a day for the visitors to win to wrap up the District 10 high schools senior boys’ volleyball season.

The visitors also happened to be the teams that finished in the top four of the league’s standings and will all host quarter-final playoff matches Monday.

The Ross Royals swept the Orangeville Bears 3-0 (27-25, 25-7, 25-14), Guelph CVI Green Gaels defeated the Lourdes Crusaders 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-16), Centennial Spartans beat the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 3-0 (25-12, 27-25, 25-19) and Centre Wellington Falcons downed the St. James Lions 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 31-29).

The win by Ross gave the Royals a perfect 14-0 season. They were followed in the standings by GCVI at 11-3, Centennial at 10-4, Centre Wellington at 9-5, Lourdes at 5-9, Bishop Mac at 4-10, St. James at 3-11 and Orangeville at 0-14.

All four quarter-final matches are scheduled for Monday at 4 p.m. The schedule has Lourdes at Centre Wellington, Bishop Macdonell at Centennial, St. James at GCVI and Orangeville at Ross.

 

JUNIOR

Centre Wellington Falcons closed out the regular season with a 3-1 loss to the St. James Lions Thursday. The Lions won 16-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-18.

Despite the setback, the Falcons finished first as they had secured that finishing position earlier in the week.

In other matches, Bishop Macdonell Celtics edged Centennial Spartans 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-23, 26-24, 15-6), Lourdes Crusaders slipped by Guelph CVI Green Gaels 3-2 (26-24, 25-13, 17-25, 22-25, 18-16) and Ross Royals swept Orangeville Bears 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-14).

Centre Wellington finished first at 10-4, while Bishop Mac was second at 9-5, Lourdes third at 9-5, Centennial fourth at 7-7, GCVI fifth at 7-7, Ross sixth at 6-8, St. James seventh at 5-9 and Orangeville eighth at 3-11. All ties were broken by the results of the matches between the tied teams.

The quarter-finals are set to go Monday. Bishop Mac is to host St. James at 3:45 p.m. while the other three matches are all to start at 4 p.m. — Guelph CVI at Centennial, Orangeville at Centre Wellington and Ross at Lourdes.
