Warriors pull away in third to down Canes

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes yielded five goals in the third period in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Thursday night at the Sleeman Centre as they were dropped 7-2 by the Stratford Warriors.

Stratford led 2-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second and the Warriors scored three times in the first seven minutes of the third to pull away.

Seamus Mooney and Tyler Harrison scored for the Canes while assists were awarded to Nathan George, Braydon Munn and Anthony Mota.

Kaleb Pearson and Corson Searles tallied twice apiece for Stratford while Connor Gregga, Curtis Abbott and Graham Brulotte each had one goal. Jack Scanlan assisted on three of the goals while Dylan Lebold, Pearson, Searles, Mitchell Casey, Hugh Anderson, Evan Dowd, Gregga, Abbott, Ryan Nicholson and Brulotte each had one assist.

Stratford outshot the Canes 40-31 and went 4-for-5 on its power play while the Canes went 1-for-7.

Ruan Badenhorst was the winning netminder for Stratford while Jet Greaves was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net.

The game was the first for forward Mackenzie Aiken who was acquired from Stratford Tuesday. He had a goal and five assists and 20 penalty minutes in 16 games for the Warriors this season. Aiken had also played two seasons with the Espanola Express of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League where he amassed 21 goals, 18 assists and 121 penalty minutes in 96 games.

Thursday’s loss was the eighth consecutive setback for the Canes and it leaves them sixth in the Midwestern Conference at 6-10-1-2 while Stratford is tied for the division lead with the Listowel Cyclones. The Warriors are at 14-2-0-0.

The Canes and Warriors are to tangle again Sunday at the Sleeman Centre. It’ll be the third time the Canes have played Stratford in four games. Game time is 2 p.m.
