Westside Thunder grabs third in senior volleyball

ORANGEVILLE – The Westside Thunder secured third place in the final District 4 high schools senior boys’ volleyball standings despite dropping their final match of the regular season.

The Thunder was edged 3-2 by the Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest, the Wolverines winning 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11.

That result left the Thunder and Wolverines tied for third in the final standings with 5-5 records. The Thunder was awarded third place by winning the tiebreaker thanks to an earlier 2-0 win over Wellington Heights Oct. 11 when all teams in the league gathered at Norwell for seven hours of league play. That day, first team to win two sets was declared the match winner.

In other play Thursday, the Emmanuel Christian Eagles blanked the Erin Raiders 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-12).

Norwell Varsity Reds finished atop the league with a perfect 10-0 record while Emmanuel Christian was second at 7-3. Erin Raiders finished at 3-7 and were followed by the Centre Dufferin Royals at 0-10.

Top four teams qualify for the playoffs. Wellington Heights is to play at Norwell in one semifinal Tuesday while Emmanuel Christian is to host Westside in the other semifinal Wednesday.

 

JUNIOR

Westside clinched second place with a 3-1 win over Wellington Heights Thursday. The Thunder won 25-15, 25-14, 15-25, 25-22.

In another match, Emmanuel Christian prevailed in the battle of the two teams that didn’t qualify for the playoffs as they defeated the College Heights Huskies 3-1. The Eagles won 25-12, 25-14, 25-27, 25-12.

Norwell finished first at 9-1 and was followed by Westside at 7-3, Wellington Heights and Centre Dufferin each at 6-4, Emmanuel Christian at 2-8 and College Heights at 0-10.

Semifinals are slated for Tuesday with Centre Dufferin playing at Norwell and Wellington Heights and Westside meeting again at Orangeville.
