Wickens eighth in weekend’s first race at Detroit

DETROIT – Guelph’s Robert Wickens finished eighth in Saturday’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, the opening dual of the weekend Dual in Detroit.

Wickens completed the 70 laps of the 2.35-mile circuit in one hour, 39 minutes, 46.0904 seconds to finish 21.4715 seconds behind the winner, Scott Dixon. Wickens also finished less than a second ahead of the next three finishers, Josef Newgarden, Spencer Pigot and teammate James Hinchcliffe.

The finish raises Wickens’ point total for his rookie season in the Verizon IndyCar Series to 202, good for sixth place. Alexander Rossi leads at 276 and he’s followed by Dixon at 272, Indy 500 winner Will Power at 269, Newgarden at 255 and Ryan Hunter-Reay at 227.

Second race of the weekend Duals is set for Sunday afternoon.
