Wickens to start Indy 500 on sixth row
INDIANAPOLIS – Robert Wickens of Guelph is to start his first Indianapolis 500 from the sixth row in his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Lucas Oils Dallara-Honda.
Wickens was 18th fastest during pole day qualifying for the Verizon IndyCar Series Sunday with a four-lap average speed of 226.296 mph and is to start from the outside of the sixth row.
Ed Carpenter qualified fastest at 229.618 MPH and was 1 mph faster than all but one of the other qualifiers for the 33-car race that is to go May 27. Simon Pagenaud was second-fastest at 228.761.
It’s the third time Carpenter has qualified on the pole. Best finish in his 14 previous Indy 500s is fifth recorded in 2008.
