Windsor forces Gryphon hockey men to series limit

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons and Windsor Lancers will meet Sunday at the Gryphon Centre to decide the winner in OUA men’s hockey league their best-of-three West Division quarter-final playoff series.

The Lancers forced the series to its three-game limit with a 4-3 victory at the Windsor Arena Saturday night. The Gryphs had won the series opener 3-1 at the Gryphon Centre Thursday night.

Guelph never led Saturday. Windsor scored twice in the first period before the Gryphs tied it with a pair of goals 52 seconds apart late in the second. The Lancers netted two goals 20 seconds apart just past the midway mark of the third to restore their two-goal lead before the Gryphs cut the gap back to one with 1:41 to play.

Trevor Morbeck, Todd Winder and Max McCutcheon scored for the Gryphs while Reilly O’Connor, Tryg Strand, Josh McFadden and Nick Boyer each had an assist.

Todd Ratchford, Ben Assad, Kyle Hope and Ian Parker hit for a goal apiece for Windsor. Nathan Veres, Kody Gagnon and Alex Friesen were each awarded an assist.

The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 35-32 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while Windsor went 0-for-4.

Andrew Masters was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net while Matt Badour was the winner for Windsor.

Game time Sunday at the Gryphon Centre is 7:30 p.m. The winner advances to next week’s divisional semifinals.
