Wolverines get first in senior basketball
MOUNT FOREST – The Wellington Heights Wolverines secured a first-place finish in the District 4 high schools senior girls’ basketball league with a 43-16 victory over the Westside Thunder Thursday.
The Wolverines and Emmanuel Christian Eagles of Fergus finished the regular season tied for top spot with 9-1 records. The Wolverines and Eagles split their two regular-season games, Wellington Heights defeating Emmanuel Christian by 12 points for their victory and the Eagles getting their win by 11 points.
Centre Dufferin Royals finished third at 5-5 and the Norwell Varsity Reds were fourth at 3-7. Finishing out of the playoffs with 2-8 records were the Erin Raiders and Emmanuel Christian is to host Centre Dufferin in a semifinal Monday at 2:30 p.m. and Norwell is to play at Wellington Heights in the other semifinal Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Wellington Heights 43 Westside 16
Mackenna Iles connected for 15 points for Emmanuel Christian while Taylor McLellan and Mikaela Dagelinckx netted six apiece.
Adnam Perro had seven for Westside.
Emmanuel Christian 31 Erin 15
Laura Vis had 11 points for Emmanuel Christian while Janelle Vanleeuwen netted seven.
Mackenzie Collings had five for Erin while Savannah Sketchley collected four.
Wellington Heights 43 Westside 28
Wellington Heights finished first in junior, too, with a 7-1 record. The Wolverines were followed by Centre Dufferin at 6-2, Westside at 4-4, Erin at 3-5 and Emmanuel Christian at 0-8.
Wellington Heights is to host Erin in a semifinal Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
Nina Rodrigues had 10 points in the win over Westside.
Jaime Wright had 13 for Westside while Leah VanderByl picked up six.
Erin 26 Emmanuel Christian 17
Kyla Warren and Morgan Sadler had eight points apiece for Erin.
Arielle Swaving had eight points for Emmanuel Christian while Naomi Meerstra chipped in with four.
Erin is to play at Wellington Heights Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
