15U Junior Gryphs strike gold in 16U volleyball tourney

MAPLE — The Guelph Junior Gryphons Black 15-and-under girls’ team captured the title in the Ontario Volleyball Association’s 16U Girls Trillium Green C Challenge Cup tournament at Maple Saturday.

The locals finished second in their pool as they defeated Markham Revolution Fury 2-0 (25-12, 25-12) and lost 2-0 (25-20, 25-21) to the Galaxy Stars.

The Junior Gryphs swept the Markham Thunder 2-0 (25-16, 25-21) in the quarter-finals and edged Venom Cobras 2-1 (25-19, 20-25, 15-11) in the semifinals to gain a berth in the gold-medal match where they edged the Galaxy Stars 2-1 (27-25, 15-25, 15-9).

 

15U Boys

The Junior Gryphs placed fifth in the 15-and-under boys’ Trillium A Challenge Cup Saturday at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School.

The Junior Gryphs finished second in their three-team pool as they defeated the third-place Milton Edge 2-0 (25-9, 25-17), but fell 2-0 (25-19, 25-14) to the first-place Milton Edge Razors.

The locals won their pre-quarters match 2-0 (25-13, 25-12) over LVC Fire Blaze, but lost 2-0 (25-15, 25-23) to Sky Volley in the quarter-finals.

That loss put the Junior Gryphs in the consolation round where they swept the Waterloo Tigers Black 2-0 (25-23, 25-23) to claim the fifth-place finish.

 

16U Girls

The Junior Gryphs Black finished tied for fifth in the 16U B Challenge Cup Saturday at Georgetown’s Christ the King Catholic Secondary School.

The Junior Gryphs were second in their pool as they defeated Thundercats Rage 2-0 (25-19, 25-17) and fell 2-0 (25-11, 25-10) to Defensa White.

The Guelph side was edged 2-1 (25-21, 22-25, 15-13) by Titans Cronus in the quarter-finals.

That put the locals into the consolation round where they beat REACH Aspire 2-0 (27-25, 25-21).

Junior Gryphs Red finished in a tie for fifth in the Green D Challenge Cup Saturday at Stouffville District Secondary School.

The Guelph girls were second in their pool as they defeated Waves White 2-0 (25-12, 25-21) and lost 2-0 (25-17, 25-13) to EVP Eagles Black.

In the playoff round, the Junior Gryphs were defeated 2-0 (25-20, 25-22) by Evolution Ice in the quarter-finals and edged Waves White 2-1 (25-22, 27-29, 15-7) in their consolation match.
