Rocks edge Muskies to close in on A final

ELORA – The Elora Rocks are a win away from advancing to the Western Ontario Athletic Association’s A final after edging the Shelburne Muskies 4-3 Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The win gives Elora a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven A semifinal. The A playoffs are for teams that finished the regular season ninth and lower.

Elora led 2-0 at the end of the opening period Friday after scoring in the first and last minutes of the period. The teams scored two goals apiece in the second before Shelburne closed a gap to a single goal with a goal with 2:47 to go and goaltender Malcolm Young on the bench in favour of an extra skater.

Chad Herron had a pair of goals for the Rocks while Stevie Alvo and Lyam Cripps also scored. Cripps and Bradey Prosic each had two assists while Shawn Lantz, Ryan Halbych and Spencer Gourlay had one apiece.

Chris Greer scored twice for Shelburne and Stephan Scholling netted the other goal. Josh Sguigna assisted on two of the goals and Travis Knight, Nick Hodgson, Kris Dobinson and Luke Richardson collected single assists.

The teams each took 34 shots on net while Elora netminder Craig Byford made 31 saves for the win and Young made 30 for Shelburne.

Fifth game of the series is slated for Saturday at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in Shelburne. Game time is 8 p.m.

If Shelburne wins that game, the teams are to battle in Game 6 Sunday at Elora starting at 4:30 p.m.

Winner of the series will play the winner of the other semifinal between the Tillsonburg Thunder and Milverton 4-Wheel Drives in the A final. Tillsonburg and Milverton are tied 2-2 with Game 5 Saturday night at Tillsonburg.
