Three-goal outbursts power Mohawks to win

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks used a pair of three-goal outbursts to claim a 10-6 victory over the St. Catharines Spartans in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Sunday at the Elora and District Community Centre.

After getting the lone goal of the first period, a shorthanded marker in the final minute of the period, the Mohawks scored three times in the final six minutes of the second period to carry a 6-3 lead into the third period.

Ryan Mueller, Hyatt Welsh and Zack Cameron scored twice each for the Mohawks while single goals were added by Nathan Bolger, Dean Sealey, Trent Spear and Jayden Bushey. Getting two assists each were Welsh, Sealey, Cameron, Brett Harrison and Spear while Owen Ristov, Ryan Fitzgerald, Sam Dramnitzke, Mueller and Owen O’Donnell each had one assist.

Sam LeClair hit for four goals for St. Catharines while Carter Geoffroy and Blair Pachereva scored the other goals. Daniel Kennedy had four assists, Pachereva and Mitchell Geoffroy had two each and Owen Bachelor and Carter Geoffroy had one apiece.

St. Catharines outshot Elora 47-45, but the Mohawks made the most of their power plays with five goals on eight power plays. They held the Spartans to one power-play goal on seven power plays.

Ryan Fitzgerald got the win with 41 saves in the Elora net while Austin Paddy took the loss for Windsor. He had 35 saves.

The win lifts the Mohawks to 4-1-1 and they’re undefeated since a loss to the Six Nations Rebels in their season opener. The win was also the third in a row for the Mohawks, all three wins coming at home.

St. Catharines falls to 2-4-0 with the loss.

The Mohawks have road games on back-to-back nights this week as they’re to play the Owen Sound North Stars (3-4-1) at Owen Sound Thursday and the Niagara Thunderhawks (1-1-1) at Niagara-on-the-Lake Friday.
