81’s hit in third for first win of quarter-final series

PALMERSTON – A pair of goals in the third period lifted the Mapleton-Minto 81’s to a 5-4 victory over the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s AA hockey quarter-final playoff action Sunday at the Palmerston arena.

Saugeen Shores leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.

The Winterhawks led 2-1 at the end of the first period before the 81’s came back to tie it 3-3 by the end of the second. M-M scored two in a row in the first half of the third before Saugeen Shores cut the gap to a single goal with 8:54 to go.

Tommy Hoogaars struck for two goals for M-M while singletons were netted by Adam Kawawlec, Kyle Ellis and Brody Lemay.

Josh Deyell had two goals for Saugeen Shores while Bryan Kazarian and James McHaig added single goals.

Fourth game of the series is set for Tuesday at the Saugeen Shores Community Complex in Port Elgin. Game time is 8:30 p.m.

Fifth game is to go at Port Elgin Friday at 8:30 p.m.

If a sixth game is necessary, it’s to be played at the Steve Kerr Complex in Listowel Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

If the series goes its seven-game maximum, the seventh game is slated for Sunday at Port Elgin starting at 3:30 p.m.

The series is the only one of the quarter-finals not to end in a four-game sweep. First-place Clinton Radars took four straight from the eighth-place Tavistock Royals, second-place Ripley Wolves needed four games to eliminate the seventh-place Huron East Centenaires and third-place Durham Thundercats disposed of the sixth-place Petrolia Squires in four games.

The winner of the series between the fourth-place Winterhawks and fifth-place M-M series will play Clinton in the semifinals.
