81’s surrender five in first period in Game 5 loss to Shelburne

SHELBURNE – The Shelburne Muskies connected for five goals in the first period as they stayed alive in their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s AA quarter-final playoff series with a 6-3 victory over the Minto 81’s Saturday night at the Centre Dufferin Sports Complex.

The 81’s scored the opening goal of the game, but Shelburne led 5-3 at the end of the first. Shelburne scored the only other goal of the game as the Muskies tallied with 19 seconds to go in the third.

Francois Cote tallied twice for Minto while Wade Pfeffer had the other goal. Shawn Lantz assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Austin Gaboury, Jordan Delaurier, Tyler Harrison and Kyle Ellis.

Jamie Bennett had two goals and two assists for Shelburne while Josh Sguigna, Ty McCallum, Jeff Noseworthy and Nick Glassford also scored. Luke Richardson assisted on three of the goals and Daniel Atkinson, Trevor Vanalstine and Kolton Maguire also had one assist apiece.

The 81’s outshot the Muskies 38-27.

Ben Nelson started for Minto as was pulled after Shelburne’s fifth goal. Marc Williams went the rest of the way. Nelson had two saves and Williams had 19.

Edward Davey made 35 saves for Shelburne.

Minto leads the best-of-seven series 3-2. Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday at 7:15 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
