
81’s, Tavistock split games to remain tied in quarter-final
TAVISTOCK – The Minto 81’s and Tavistock Royals find themselves knotted at two wins apiece in their best-of-seven WOAA senior men’s AA quarter-final playoff series following a 4-2 victory for the 81’s Saturday night at the Tavistock and District Recreation Centre.
Tavistock had won 5-3 at the Palmerston arena Friday night.

Visiting teams have won each of the four games played in the series.
Saturday, the 81’s scored three unanswered goals in the third period for the victory. After a scoreless first period, Tavistock grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second with a pair of power-play goals.
Jack Burkett scored twice 2:45 apart in the third period to put Minto ahead. Adam Kawalec and Caleb Warren scored the other goals while Stephen Gibson had two assists and Klayton Hoelscher, Warren, Mike Pleon, Trent Verbeek and Shawn Lantz had one apiece.
Drew Gerth and Trevor Sauder scored the power-play goals 1:10 apart for Tavistock. Assists went to Patrick Vulgan, Mike Noyes and Sean Kienapple.
Tavistock outshot Minto 31-28 and went 2-for-6 on its power play while the 81’s went 2-for-5.
Daniel DeKoening had 29 saves in net for Minto while Jensen Van Boekel had 24 for Tavistock.
Friday, the Royals scored four consecutive goals including three in the final six minutes of the first period on their way to the victory in Palmerston.
Tavistock led 3-2 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second.
Matt Zilke had two goals for Tavistock while Gerth, Kienapple and Callan Christner added a goal apiece. Sauder picked up two assists and Cam Leslie, Geoff Killing, Gerth, Devon Kropf and Mitch Facey had one apiece.
Brady Anderson, Gibson and Riley Cribbin each scored for Minto while Warren had two assists and Gibson, Kawalec and Cribbin each had one.
Tavistock outshot Minto 20-8 and both teams went 2-for-5 on their power plays.
DeKoening had 16 saves for Minto while Van Boekel had five for Tavistock.
Fifth game of the series is slated for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
