81’s upend Ripley Wolves in overtime

PALMERSTON – Mike Pleon’s goal in overtime lifted the Mapleton-Minto 81’s to a 3-2 victory over the Ripley Wolves in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey play Saturday night at the Palmerston arena.

The 81’s had scored the only goal of the first period while Ripley responded with the lone goal of the second. The teams scored once apiece in the third, Riley O’Connell hitting for M-M with 37 seconds to play to force the overtime.

Austin Gaboury scored the first-period goal for the 81’s while Blake Nichol and Dan Nicoloff struck for the goals for Ripley.

The win broke a three-game losing streak for the 81’s who are fourth in the 14-team league at 8-4-2-1 while Ripley is second at 12-2-1-0.

The 81’s are to play three consecutive road games starting with a match at the Tillsonburg Memorial arena against the Tillsonburg Thunder (8-5-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. They’re also to play the league-leading Clinton Radars (13-1-0-0) at the Central Huron Community Centre Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. and the Elora Rocks (7-7-1-0) at the Elora and District Community Centre Jan. 4 at 8:30 p.m.
