81’s whitewash Lucknow to finish regular season
PALMERSTON – The Minto 81’s completed their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league’s regular-season schedule by clobbering the Lucknow Lancers 11-0 Sunday at the Palmerston arena.
The 81’s scored twice in the first period and six times in the second.
Ben Nelson picked up the shutout for Minto.
Zach Graham led the 81’s with three goals and three assists while Brendon Aitken scored twice. Single goals were netted by Chris Hardie, Brady Anderson, Kalob Witzell, Shayne Ross, Adam Kawawlec and Wade Pfeffer. Tommy Hoogaars and Pfeffer each had three assists while Dylan Hoffman and Kawawlec had two apiece and Shawn Lantz had one.
Branden Bean started in net for Lucknow and was replaced by Ben Dorscht about 13 minutes into the second period after Minto’s sixth goal.
The win lifted Minto into seventh in the final standings at 13-8-0-1 while Lucknow was already locked into a 13th-place finish. The Lancers completed the season at 3-16-0-3.
The 81’s are to compete in the league’s AA playoffs for its top eight teams while Lucknow is to compete in the A playoffs for the bottom six teams.
Garrett Meurs of the first-place Ripley Wolves finished as the league’s scoring champion with 24 goals and 24 assists while Kawawlec was second at 22 goals and 23 assists and Pfeffer fifth at 10 goals and 27 assists.
The 81’s are to battle the Shelburne Muskies in the league’s best-of-seven AA quarter-finals.
The series is to start Saturday at the Centre Dufferin complex in Shelburne. Game time is 8 p.m.
Game 2 is slated for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
Shelburne finished in second place at 17-5-0-0.
The 81’s and Muskies split their two games this season, both winning at home. The Muskies prevailed 5-1 Oct. 19 and Minto won 6-2 Nov. 30.
