AA soccer: Bishop Mac girls off to OFSAA

BRANTFORD – The District 10-champion Bishop Macdonell Celtics are headed to the OFSAA provincial high school AA girls’ soccer championship tournament.

Bishop Mac claimed the CWOSSA AA title Thursday with a 1-0 win over the St. David Celtics of Waterloo in the championship match.

The Guelph squad gained its berth in the final with a 2-1 victory over the Paris Panthers in the semifinals earlier in the day. St. David blanked the Galt Ghosts 3-0 in the other semifinal.

Wednesday, Bishop Mac won three times to grab top spot in their pool. The Celtics defeated Galt 4-1, Saugeen Royals 5-0 and Simcoe Sabres 3-1.

St. David finished first in the other pool by outscoring its opponents 7-0.

One of St. David’s wins was over the District 4 champion Westside Thunder of Orangeville. The Thunder also fell 2-0 to Paris and they downed Sacred Heart 3-0.

The OFSAA tournament is to go June 6 to 8 at Tecumseh.

 

AA Boys Soccer

PARIS – Both the District 10 champion Lourdes Crusaders and District 4’s Norwell Varsity Reds were ousted from the CWOSSA championship tournament following Wednesday’s opening day of competition.

The Crusaders suffered three losses in their pool as they were defeated 4-0 by Preston Panthers, 2-1 by Sacred Heart and 4-1 by Simcoe.

Tyler Alessio scored against Preston and Luke Creighton scored against Simcoe.

Norwell was also handed three setbacks in the other pool as the Varsity Reds were blanked 2-0 by St. Mary’s Mustangs of Owen Sound, 4-0 by Paris and 6-0 by St. David.

Friday morning’s semifinals have Simcoe playing St. David in one and St. Mary’s battling Preston in the other.

The winners are to meet in the championship match at 2 p.m.
