AAA soccer: Ross girls out after semifinal setback
KITCHENER – The Ross Royals reached Thursday’s semifinals of the CWOSSA high school AAA girls’ soccer championship tournament before being ousted.
The Royals were handed a 5-3 setback by the St. Mary’s Eagles of Kitchener in the semifinals.
Jordan Faveri scored all three goals for the Royals while Alex Bassenes and Lexi Kroeker scored twice apiece for St. Mary’s. Alexa Cimermancec had the other goal.
St. Mary’s won the final by an identical 5-3 score over the Grand River Renegades of Kitchener. Kroeker had a hat trick and Cimermancec added two goals for St. Mary’s while Grand River’s goals were scored by Kayla Ambrose with two and Jenny Ha with one.
Ross had a win and a loss in pool play Wednesday as the Royals defeated Assumption 7-3, but lost 8-1 to Grand River.
Faveri had a hat trick against Assumption while Lauren Brulotte scored twice and Maressa Bell and Emma Elliott netted single goals.
Faveri had the lone goal against Grand River.
The Orangeville Scarlet Bears, District 10’s representatives in the tournament, were eliminated after they suffered two losses on the opening day Wednesday.
The Bears were defeated 4-2 by St. John’s Green Eagles of Brantford and 5-0 by Eastwood Rebels of Kitchener.
Luke Crilly and Braydon Mortson scored for Orangeville in the game against St. John’s.
Friday’s semifinals have Eastwood against Cameron Heights Gaels of Kitchener and St. Mary’s Eagles of Kitchener against St. John’s.
Winners advance to the 12:30 p.m. final at Woodside Park.
