Another close setback at UQAM for Gryphon hoops men

MONTREAL – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their third close loss in as many days at UQAM’s Olg Hrycak Winter Classic men’s basketball tournament Sunday when they were edged 83-79 by the Brandon Bobcats.

The Gryphs dropped their three games in the tournament by a combined total of 19 points.

Guelph led by a point entering the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, stretched the gap to three 10 seconds into the quarter and then saw Brandon hit six consecutive points to go ahead for good.

In the final 10 seconds of the game, the Bobcats sank four free throws and Rasheed Weekes of the Gryphs drained a couple of jumpers.

Brandon led the close match 21-19 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs grabbed a 39-38 lead by halftime and the locals were up 60-59 at the end of the third quarter.

Malcolm Glanville struck for 29 points for the Gryphs while Banky Alade had 14, Kieran Naus nine and Weekes seven.

Tyvon Cooper collected 28 points for Brandon while Pookie Saunders had 24 and Troy Grant 15.

The Gryphs are tied for fifth in the OUA’s West Division at 3-7 while Brandon is 2-8 in Canada West league play.

The Gryphs are to return to league play with a pair of games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (2-8) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. They’re to meet in 8 p.m. games both Friday and Saturday.
