Another shutout victory for Gryphon hockey women
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons hit for their second consecutive OUA women’s hockey league shutout victory Sunday at the Gryphon Centre when they blanked the previously unbeaten Nipissing Lakers 3-0.
The Gryphs scored once in each period for the win while Aurore Beaulieu stopped all 28 shots fired her way for her second shutout of the season and Guelph’s third.
Beaulieu had stopped 14 shots in a 4-0 season-opening win over the Laurier Golden Hawks at Waterloo Oct. 18. Rookie Alexandrea Davidson had 19 saves in a 3-0 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.
Nicole MacKinnon on a power play, Mayla Mayer and Hannah Tait into an empty net on an unassisted effort accounted for Sunday’s goals. Miranda Lantz, Gabby Smyth, Karli Shell and MacKinnon each had an assist.
Danika Ranger had 18 saves in the loss for Nipissing.
Nipissing outshot the Gryphs 28-21 while Guelph was 1-for-6 on its power play and Nipissing was scoreless on four power plays.
Guelph is fifth in the 13-team league at 5-2-1 while Nipissing is third at 6-1-0.
The Gryphs will have a pair of road games next weekend as they’re to battle the Queen’s Gaels (4-4-0) at Kingston Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (0-8-0) at Oshawa Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
