Another sweep setback for Gryphon volleyball men

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their fifth consecutive loss and fourth in a row by a sweep as they were blanked by the York Lions in OUA men’s volleyball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Lions won 25-21, 30-28, 25-17.

The Gryphs had a .135 kill percentage in the match and also had 31 kills, an ace, six blocks, 29 assists and 28 digs.

The Lions had a kill percentage of .361 with 55 kills, three aces, six blocks, 52 assists and 42 digs.

Arjun Selhi had 10 kills and eight digs for the Gryphs while Jacob Schweyer had eight kills and a block and Joshua Glasbergen had five kills. Cameron Chadwick had an ace and a block while Jacob Bailey had four blocks. Jack Richards had 24 assists and four digs while Andrew Song had five assists and Daniel Pickett had eight digs.

For York, Andrew Tauhid had 21 kills and 11 digs while Alex Dorling had three blocks and Jasraj Nijjar had 47 assists. Jordan Gazzola, Nijjar and Dorling each had an ace.

The Gryphs are ninth in the standings at 8-9. Top eight qualify for the playoffs and the Western Mustangs and Toronto Metropolitan Bold are tied for seventh at 9-8 and the Nipissing Lakers are sixth at 9-7.

York is third at 12-5.

The Gryphs have three matches to go in their regular season. They’re to play the Waterloo Warriors (10th at 6-10) at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex Friday at 8 p.m. before hosting the RMC Paladins (tied for 12th at 0-16) Feb. 17 and 18 at the GGAC at 8 p.m. both nights.
