Barnes, Lauzon, Schaffer-Baker players of game

GUELPH – Clark Barnes (special teams), Justin Lauzon (defence) and Kian Schaffer-Baker (offence) are the Gryphons players of the game in their 53-19 win over the York Lions in OUA football play Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Barnes returned York’s first kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown marking the third consecutive game he’d returned the opposition’s first kickoff for a major. Barnes finished with a total of 157 yards on four kickoff returns. Barnes added another TD later in the game he connected with quarterback Theo Landers on a 30-yard score on his only reception of the game.

Barnes has an OUA-best 413 yards and 45.9 yards per return average on kickoff returns this season. And no other player in the league has scored a touchdown on a kickoff return this season.

It’s the third consecutive week that Barnes has been Guelph’s special teams player of the game.

A rookie linebacker, Lauzon returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown against York. A transfer from Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec, Lauzon also recorded a sack in the game, his first with the Gryphs, and he had 3½ tackles to bring his seasonal total to six

Receiver Schaffer-Baker caught three passes for 62-yards, including one for a 12-yard touchdown, his first major of the season and sixth in four years with the Gryphs. He has a total of 82 catches in regular-season games and has scored at least one TD each year.

The Gryphs are to return to the field Saturday for a game against the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Warrior Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
