Barrie Baycats battle back to tie IBL final

KITCHENER – The Barrie Baycats struck for three runs in the seventh inning to claim a 6-4 victory over the Kitchener Panthers in the second game of the Intercounty Baseball League’s championship series.

The result squares the best-of-seven final at a win apiece.

Kitchener led 3-1 after the fourth inning, but Barrie pulled even with two runs in the fifth and shot ahead with three in the seventh. The Panthers added their final run in the ninth inning.

Reliever Emilis Guerrero was the winning pitcher for Barrie. He took over from starter Matthew St. Kitts in the sixth inning while Chris Nagorski came in during the ninth inning to get the save.

St. Kitts yielded three runs off nine hits and a walk in five innings while Guerrero surrendered a run off four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Nagorski got the two batters he faced in the ninth to ground out. St. Kitts had six strikeouts and Guerrero had three.

Starter Jonder Nartinez took the loss for Kitchener. He pitched six innings while Mike Schnurr, Stephen Gade and Matt Vickers each had an inning of work.

Martinez gave up five runs off seven hits and two walks while Schnurr yielded a run off four walks. Gade yielded a hit. Martinez had three strikeouts and Schnurr and Vickers each had one.

Barrie’s Jordan Castaldo and Kitchener’s Mike Gordner each hit a homer in the game while Colin Gordner had a double for the Panthers. Starlin Rodriguez and Glenn Jackson each hit two singles for the Baycats while Kevin Atkinson, Tim Smith and Branfy Infante each hit one. Z Johnson clouted three singles for Kitchener while Tanner Nivins and Mike Gordner hit two apiece and Brian Burton, Keegan Marsden, Mike Andrulis and Colin Gordner each hit one.

Third game of the series is to go Saturday at Barrie’s Coates Stadium while the fourth game is set for Sunday at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park. Both games have 7 p.m. game times.
