Baseball Gryphs ousted from semifinals at championship tourney

AJAX – The Guelph Gryphons were knocked out of the OUA men’s baseball championship tournament Sunday when they were handed a 5-2 setback by the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Ajax Sportsplex.

The Gryphs finished the tournament at 3-1.

Toronto scored three runs in the third inning and one in the fourth before the Gryphs collected a single run in the seventh. The Varsity Blues got that run back in the bottom of the seventh while Guelph scored the final run of the game in the ninth.

Robert Wolfer had a double and a single for the Gryphs while Mason Copeland, Luke Whitehouse and Chase Nelson each hit a single.

Sam Salemi pitched four innings for the Gryphs and he allowed four runs, three earned, off six hits and a walk. He had two strikeouts. Mitch Over relieved for 2 2/3 innings. He surrendered an unearned run off two hits and a walk and he fanned four. Garret Morgan gave up a hit in 1/3 of an inning.

Toronto advanced to the final where they were edged 4-3 by the Laurier Golden Hawks in 10 innings.
