Baseball Gryphs split with Western to finish regular season
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons split a doubleheader with the Western Mustangs Saturday at Hastings Stadium in what turned out to be their final outings of the OUA baseball league’s regular season.
Western won the opening game of the twinbill 5-1 while the Gryphs responded with a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.
The two teams were to meet again in London Sunday, but those games were cancelled due to rain.
With the regular season serving only as a tuneup for next weekend’s regional qualifiers, no rained-out matches were rescheduled.
The Gryphs are in the Region A qualifier at St. Catharines along with the McMaster Marauders and host Brock Badgers.
Guelph went 4-4 in its tuneup games while McMaster went 5-3 and Brock went 6-4.
The Ws – Windsor, Waterloo, Western and Wilfrid Laurier – will be in Region B at Waterloo while Region C in Ottawa will feature Carleton, Ottawa and Queen’s. The three Toronto squads – Ryerson, Toronto and York – travel to Sudbury to compete in Region D with host Laurentian.
The Region champions advance to the league’s Final Four tournament hosted by the Region D winner, likely the Oct. 16-17 weekend.
