Baseball Gryphs win pair to open championship tourney

AJAX – The Guelph Gryphons opened the OUA men’s baseball championship tournament with a pair of wins Friday at the Ajax Sportsplex.

The Gryphs defeated the Queen’s Gaels 6-4 and the Laurier Golden Hawks 10-8 The wins secure a berth in the tournament semifinals Sunday morning.

After giving up two runs in the first inning of Friday’s game against Queen’s, the Gryphs responded with two runs of their own in the second and three in the third to shoot ahead for good.

Paul Neophytou led the Gryphs with a triple and a single to drive in three runs while Matthew Carscadden had two singles. Getting one single apiece were Mason Copeland, Luke Whitehouse, Chase Nelson, Connor Mitchell and Ashton Patterson, who also had a stolen base.

Peter Zytner started on the mound for the Gryphs and went 3 1/3 innings before Garret Morgan relieved. Zytner yielded four earned runs off five hits while Morgan picked up the win as he held Queen’s scoreless in his stint of 2 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits and two walks and struck out six. Zytner had one strikeout. Mitchell got the save by keeping the Gaels scoreless and hitless in the seventh. He walked one and struck out two.

The Gryphs never trailed against Laurier as they scored a single run in the second inning, five in the third and four in the sixth. The Golden Hawks had a stretch of four consecutive two-run innings starting with the third inning.

Patterson hit a double and a single while Copeland, Mitchell and Neophytou each hit two singles. Nelson added a double while Carscadden had a single.

Whitehouse and Mitchell each had a stolen base.

Sam Salemi and Thomas Henderson pitched for the Gryphs. They combined to give up eight runs off 10 hits. They also surrendered five walks and struck out three.

The Gryphs are to complete preliminary pool play Saturday morning with a game against the Ryerson Rams.
