
Baseball Spartans wrap up unbeaten regular season
GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans completed an undefeated run through District 10 high school baseball’s regular season Tuesday at Pearson Park.
The Spartans posted a 13-3 victory over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels for their fifth win in as many league outings.
Centennial entered the game knowing it had already clinched a first-place finish as the teams that finished in the next four positions in the standings had completed their regular seasons Monday at Pearson Park.
That day defending champion St. James Lions dropped the Lourdes Crusaders 12-3 while the Bishop Macdonell Celtics blanked the Ross Royals 2-0.
St. James, Ross and Bishop Mac all finished with 3-2 records while Lourdes finished at 1-4 and GCVI was at 0-5.
As the Lions, Royals and Celtics each had a win and a loss in games involving two of the three teams, the three-way tie was broken by run differential. St. James was placed second with 17 more runs scored than allowed while Ross had 15 more scored than yielded and Bishop Mac gave up nine more runs than they scored.
With the tie broken in the Lions’ favour, Bishop Mac was given third ahead of Ross thanks to their win over Ross on Monday.
The final standings give Centennial and St. James byes in Thursday’s quarter-finals at Pearson Park while Bishop Mac is to play GCVI at 1 p.m. and Ross is to play Lourdes at 3:30 p.m.
Thursday’s winners are to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals at Pearson Park. Centennial is to play the lowest-ranked quarter-final survivor at 1 p.m. while St. James is to play the other quarter-final winner at 3:30 p.m.
Semifinal winners move on to the championship game set for next Thursday at Pearson Park at 3:30 p.m.
