Bears, Spartans remain in battle for second in senior hoops

GUELPH – The battle for second place in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league will go down to the final week of the regular season after both the Orangeville Bears and Centennial Spartans posted victories Thursday.

Orangeville defeated the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 52-35 and Centennial downed the Ross Royals 50-26.

While the Bishop Macdonell Celtics lead the league at 10-0, Orangeville’s at 8-2 and Centennial’s at 8-3.

Second could be decided on Nov. 1, the final day of the regular season, when Centennial hosts Orangeville at 5:30 p.m.

That’s Centennial’s only game next week while Orangeville is to host Bishop Mac Tuesday.

Orangeville defeated Centennial by 14 points Oct. 9 at Orangeville.

 

Orangeville 52 Guelph CVI 35

Breanne Murray and Alicia Bowering led Orangeville with eight points apiece.

Shannon Westwood collected 12 for GCVI while Tina Qiu netted 10.

 

Centennial 50 Ross 26

Jocelyn Newby struck for 14 points for Centennial while Sydney Thomas added nine.

Clodagh Stalker and Sarah Hopkins hit for nine apiece for Ross.

 

St. James 51 Lourdes 20

Grace Mencfeld dropped in 21 points for St. James while Lauralee Mackeigan added 11.

Ronette Eimar had eight for Lourdes and Sami Romero collected four.

 

Junior

Centre Wellington 42 Bishop Macdonell 26

Kara den Hoed collected 15 points for Centre Wellington and Nicole Cudmore followed with eight.

Madeline Tavares had 14 for Bishop Mac and Sophia Longo had six.

 

Orangeville 49 Guelph CVI 35

Emilie Franz sank 15 points for Orangeville.

Olga Llander had 17 for GCVI.

 

Ross 36 Centennial 11

Alicia Garay and Valeria Alsota had eight points apiece for Ross.

Shireen Ali had four for Centennial.

 

St. James 50 Lourdes 16

Elivia Garbuio connected for 10 points for St. James while H. Wurr had nine and Olivia Brown and Ella Farrelly each had eight.

Modera Omot had six for Lourdes and Isabella Banni contributed four.
