Best, Leger advance to world U20 semifinals

TAMPERE, Finland – The two Speed River Track and Field Club members competing in the world under-20 championship meet have advanced in their respective events Friday.

Guelph native Ashlan Best was second in her heat of the women’s 200 metres with a season’s-best clocking of 23.62 seconds. Heat winner Alisha Rees of Great Britain won in 23.49 seconds.

Top four in each heat and the four fastest of the remaining competitors get spots in the semifinals.

Kendra Leger of St. Catharines who is also a member of the University of Guelph’s track team, placed second in her women’s 100-metre hurdles heat to advance to the semifinals. Top three in each heat and the next six fastest gained berths in the semifinals.

Leger clocked a time of 13.59 seconds to finish second to Jamaica’s Britany Anderson who had a time of 13.37 seconds. Leger’s time was sixth fastest overall.

The semifinals in both events are set for Saturday.
