Big inning pushes Crusaders to one-sided victory

GUELPH – The Lourdes Crusaders struck for 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim a 14-6 victory over the Centre Dufferin Royals in District 4/10 high school baseball play Wednesday at Hastings Stadium.

That big inning allowed the Crusaders to rally for the win. They had led 3-1 at the end of the first before the visitors from Shelburne scored a run in the fourth and then went ahead with three runs in the top of the fifth.

Centre Dufferin scored its final run in the seventh inning.

In their half of the fifth, the Crusaders went through the batting order before an out was recorded. They managed four hits in the inning and were helped as Centre Dufferin pitchers issued four walks and hit two batters. The Royals also committed three errors in the inning.

Brad Fraser hit two singles for Lourdes while Tyler Stoltz slugged a triple and Jackson Hurst hit a double. Getting one single apiece were Eric Blaumer, Michael MacKillop, Colin Carscadden and Colin Ranger.

Lourdes pitchers scattered 11 hits, two for extra bases, walked two and struck out one.

In all, Centre Dufferin pitchers yielded seven walks and had five strikeouts.

The result left Lourdes at 3-1-0 and Centre Dufferin at 1-3-0.
