
Big quarter keeps Gryphon hoops women unbeaten
GUELPH – Buoyed by their largest single-quarter output of the OUA women’s basketball season, the Guelph Gryphons remained unbeaten with an 82-73 victory over the McMaster Marauders Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs struck for 33 points in the second quarter to turn a 17-12 deficit at the start of the quarter into a 45-31 lead at halftime. The teams scored 18 points apiece in the third quarter. The Marauders couldn’t get the gap any smaller than eight points in the final quarter.

Natalie Vigna led the Gryphs with 25 points while NacKeely Shantz had 21, Julia Colcavecchia had 12 and Marielle Klueskens netted 11. Shantz had 12 rebounds and eight assists while Vigna had two steals. Vigna, Colcavecchia and Renee Armstrong each had a block.
Amy Stinson came off the bench to lead McMaster with 19 points while Sarah Gates had 18, Jenna Button had 11 and Cassie Joli-Coeur added 10. Gates had nine rebounds while Deanna Mataseje had a block.
The Gryphs shot 51 percent on field goals, 35 percent on three-pointers and 90 percent on free throws. They also had 20 points in the paint, 20 off turnovers, six on second chances and eight from their bench.
McMaster shot 37 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers and 38 percent (3 of 8) on free throws. They also had 18 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, five on second chances and 29 from their bench.
The result leaves the Gryphs a perfect 7-0 in league play while McMaster drops to 5-4.
The Gryphs are to complete play in the first semester Saturday with a game against the Western Mustangs (6-2) Saturday at Western’s Alumni Hall. Game time is 6 p.m.
