Birkett’s outburst powers Patriots to win over Hanover
HANOVER – Jack Birkett struck for four consecutive goals as he helped lift the Mount Forest Patriots to a 6-4 victory over the Hanover Barons in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the P & H Centre.
Birkett’s scoring outburst came in a span of seven minutes and eight seconds in the second period and it turned a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead that remained at the end of the period.
Hanover had led 2-1 at the end of the first period.
Chet Philips and Luke Eurig scored the other goals for Mount Forest while Troy Weber and Thomas Coulter each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Owen Rahn, William Black, Nathan Bolger and Philips.
Hanover received goals from Noah Johnson, Bryan Richardson, Brock Hoelscher and Ryan Marriage. Spencer Dupuis and Quinton Maddock each had two assists while Jordon Ferrier, Richardson and Chris Ferri collected one apiece.
Mount Forest outshot Hanover 45-40 and went 1-for-6 on the power play while Hanover was scoreless on seven power plays.
Aidan Quish had 36 saves to get the win in net for the Patriots while Jakob Adams had 37 saves for Hanover.
The win lifts the Patriots to 2-1-0-0 while Hanover drops to 1-1-0-1.
The Patriots are to play the Mitchell Hawks (2-1-0-0) at Mitchell Sunday. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
