Bishop Mac girls knocked out of provincial tourney

LONDON – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics saw their stay in the OFSAA provincial high school AA girls’ basketball championship tournament come to an end Friday with a loss in the quarter-finals.

The seventh-seed Celtics were eliminated following a 56-43 loss to the second-seed Dundas Valley Gryphons of Dundas.

Usually a fast-starting squad, the Celtics were slow out of the gates in the loss to Dundas Valley as they trailed 16-4 at the end of the opening quarter. The Gryphons were ahead 35-17 at halftime and 44-33 at the end of the third quarter.

Ashley Coverdale was Bishop Mac’s pride, hustle and determination award winner for the game.

With the win, Dundas Valley advances to Saturday morning’s semifinals where they’ll meet the sixth-seed St. Mary Crusaders of Hamilton who edged the third-seed La Salle Black Knights of Kingston 40-39.

The gold-medal match is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Earlier Friday, the Celtics grabbed a 19-5 lead in the first quarter on their way to a 52-36 victory over the 10th-seed Birchmount Park Panthers of Scarborough in the second round of the tournament.
