Bishop Mac in AA semifinals, Ross out of AAA semifinals

WALKERTON — The Bishop Macdonell Celtics are in Friday’s semifinals of both the senior and junior categories of the CWOSSA AA high school boys’ volleyball championship tournament.

The Celtics won three matches in Wednesday’s senior preliminary round to gain a berth in Friday’s semifinals.

Bishop Mac finished atop its pool by defeating Simcoe’s Holy Trinity Titans 25-14, 25-21, Cambridge’s Galt Ghosts 25-20, 25-18 and Walkerton’s Sacred Heart Crusaders 25-22, 25-16.

Finishing first in the other pool were the Westside Thunder of Orangeville. The Thunder beat Waterloo’s St. David Celtics 25-22, 25-23, Paris Panthers 25-9, 25-20 and Cambridge’s Glenview Park Panthers 22-25, 25-12, 15-5.

Bishop Mac is to play St. David in the first semifinal at Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. while Westside is to tangle with Galt in the other at 2:30 p.m. Winners advance to the 7 p.m. final.

In junior, Bishop Mac finished second in its pool after getting two wins and a loss in the preliminary round.

Bishop Mac defeated Simcoe Sabres 25-14, 25-21 and Glenview Park 25-16, 25-21, but lost 25-20, 25-18 to Owen Sound’s St. Mary’s Mustangs.

Westside of Orangeville lost its three matches as the Thunder was downed 25-18, 25-19 by St. David, 25-17, 25-17 by Paris and 22-25, 25-15, 15-7 by Sacred Heart.

Bishop Mac is to play Sacred Heart in an 11:30 a.m. semifinal Friday while St. Mary’s and St. David are to tangle in the other semifinal at 10 a.m.

Winners are to meet in the final at 5 p.m.

 

AAA

The District 10 champion Ross Royals reached the semifinals in both the senior and junior categories before being eliminated from the CWOSSA AAA high school boys’ volleyball championship tournaments by Waterloo CI Vikings Thursday at Waterloo.

In senior, the Royals were ousted following a close three-set match with eventual champion Waterloo CI. WCI won 25-21, 24-26, 18-16.

WCI advanced to the final where they swept Cambridge’s St. Benedict Saints 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-20).

Ross had finished second in its pool after splitting its two pool matches. The Royals defeated Brantford’s Assumption Lions 2-1 (24-26, 25-19, 15-7) and lost 2-0 (25-16, 25-23) to Kitchener’s Grand River Renegades.

In junior, Ross was defeated 2-0 (25-19, 25-22) by WCI in the semifinals.

WCI moved on to the final where they were swept 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-20) by Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders.

The Royals had finished second in their pool in the preliminary round as the Royals beat Brantford’s St. John’s Green Eagles 2-0 (25-23, 25-15), but lost to Waterloo-Oxford 2-1 (23-25, 25-13, 15-8).

The Wellington Heights Wolverines were out of the senior tournament after finishing fourth at the end of the round-robin segment of Thusday’s tournament.

Wellington Heights was downed 25-18, 25-15 by Breslau’s Woodland Christian Cavaliers, 25-15, 25-21 by Delhi Raiders and 25-11, 25-14 by Walkerton Riverhawks.

Woodland Christian won the final 25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 21-25, 15-11 over Walkerton.

In junior, Wellington Heights was third as the Wolverines defeated Langton’s Valley Heights Bears 25-18, 26-24, but lost 25-23, 25-12 to Kitchener’s Rockway Mennonite Flames and 25-12, 25-22 to Walkerton.

Rockway won the two-set gold-medal match 25-21, 25-22 over Walkerton.
