Bishop Mac locks up second-place finish in senior volleyball

GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics secured a second-place finish in the District 10 high school senior boys volleyball league as they edged the first-place Ross Royals 3-2 Tuesday at Ross.

The loss was the second of the regular season for the Royals who had clinched a first-place finish last week.

The Celtics dropped the first two sets before they rallied for the victory. Bishop Mac won 21-25, 14-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-12.

The result also cemented the finishing positions of all five teams in the league as the Centennial Spartans and Guelph CVI Green Gaels finished with 6-6 records, but Centennial won the tie-breaker by taking two of the three matches it played with the Gaels. The St. James Lions placed fifth at 0-11.

In a preview of Monday’s lone senior quarter-final playoff match, GCVI defeated St. James 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19) in the final game of the regular season for GCVI.

The lone game left on the schedule is a match between St. James and Bishop Mac Thursday.

The playoffs are to start with Monday’s quarter-final match. The winner will play the Royals at Ross in next Wednesday’s semifinals while Bishop Mac will host Centennial in the other one.

The final is slated for Nov. 8 at the University of Guelph, likely in the West Gym that used to be the home of the Gryphon varsity teams before the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre opened.
