Bishop Mac outlasts Guelph CVI in senior volleyball

GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics clinched at least a tie for second place in the District 10 high school senior boys’ volleyball standings by outlasting the Guelph CVI Green Gaels Wednesday.

The Celtics edged the Gaels 3-2, winning 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-12.

Ross Royals lead the league at 9-1 and can clinch first place with a win in one of their final two matches of the regular season, both against Bishop Mac.

If Bishop Mac (6-3) wins both of those matches, the Celtics will clinch first with a victory over the St. James Lions (0-10). If that happens, Bishop Mac and Ross would be tied for first, but would win the tie-breaker thanks to three wins over the Royals. A win by Bishop Mac in any one of its final three games would give the Celtics second place and a home game in the semifinals.

Ross is already assured of a home match in the semifinals.

Centennial Spartans are third at 6-6 and have completed their regular season.

GCVI is fourth at 5-6 and have a match against fifth-place St. James left on its regular season. If the Gaels and Centennial finish in a two-way tie for third, the Spartans will win the tie-breaker thanks to two wins over GCVI in the regular season.

Throw Bishop Mac into a three-way tie for second with Centennial and GCVI and the calculators will have to come out to decide the final rankings as all three are 3-3 in games involving the tied teams. The Spartans took two of three from the Gaels who took two of three from the Celtics who took two of three from the Spartans.

The regular season is to wrap up on the afternoon of Halloween.

Playoffs are to start Nov. 4.
