Bishop Mac victorious in OFSAA AA opener

LONDON – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics of Guelph opened the OFSAA provincial high school AA girls’ basketball championship tournament with a 48-26 victory over the James Cardinal McGuigan Wolves of Toronto Thursday.

Alicia Higgins was the leading scorer for the Celtics. Scoring totals for any game in the tournament have not been reported.

The Celtics are seeded seventh in the tournament while McGuigan is seeded 13th.

Bishop Mac led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter, 27-9 at halftime and 39-21 at the end of the third quarter.

The Celtics are to play 10th-seed Birchmount Park Panthers of Scarborough in the second round Friday at 10:30 a.m. Birchmount Park suffered a 57-40 loss to the ninth-seed Lo-Ellen Park Knights of Sudbury Thursday.

Friday’s winner advances to the quarter-finals later in the day.

Semifinals and medal games are scheduled for Saturday.
