Boys set for First on the Turf tourney

GUELPH – The boys are ready to be the first on the turf.

Guelph Soccer’s annual two-weekend First on the Turf Tournament is set to hit the field with the boys’ teams going April 28 to 30 and the girls following on the May 5 to 7 weekend.

A total of 84 teams are to compete in the nine-division boys’ tournament that features every age group from U9 to U17.

The host Guelph Junior Gryphons will have a total of 20 teams participating in the tournament with at least one team in each division. There are three in U9, U10 and U11 and two in U12, U13, U14, U16 and U17 and one in U15.

Of the other local associations, Rockwood FC has teams in U12 and U13 and FEDS United of Fergus-Elora has a team in U13.

The Milton Magic have 15 teams entered in the tournament while Cambridge United has 10.

Other entries are from Aurora, Brampton East, Burlington, Canadian Academy of Futbol Toronto Youth, Georgetown Mustangs, Kitchener Spirit, London Whitecaps, Markham Lightning, Mount Hamilton, Niagara Regional, North Mississauga, North Toronto Nitros, Oakville, Orangeville Storm, Owen Sound United, Paris FC, Saltfleet Stoney Creek, St. Thomas Cobras and Whitby.

Play is to start Friday at 6:30 p.m. and all games are to be played on the University of Guelph campus. The finals are set for Sunday.
