Bruised Gryphon hoops women downed by Algoma

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The bruised and battered Guelph Gryphons were handed a 91-83 setback by the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday night at Algoma’s George Leach Centre.

The Gryphs had nine players in their lineup for the match and were without Burke Bechard who had to sit out the game with a suspension after being called for a flagrant foul in the win over Algoma the previous night. Rookie Natalie Vigna was also out after suffering an injury Friday night while veteran Ivana Vujadinovic was limited to 12 minutes as she’s also nursing an injury.

The hosts led 24-22 at the end of the first quarter, 44-42 at halftime and 67-63 after the third quarter.

Algoma’s three-point shooting proved to be the difference in the game as the Thunderbirds sank 14 of the 30 shots they attempted from long range while the Gryphs were 7-of-19. Algoma also sank 19 of 30 free throws they were awarded while Guelph hit on 12 of 19.

Skyla Minaker hit for career-high 25 points for the Gryphs while Julia Kokonis had 17, Modupe Okeowo 15 and Sarah Holmes 13. Minaker also had four assists and four steals while Holmes had five steals and Okeowo had seven rebounds.

Karina Cole led all scorers with 30 points for Algoma while Karly Fracalanza has 23. Both went 5-for-8 on three-pointers. Dionne Martin added 11 points and she hauled down nine rebounds. Fracalanza had four assists.

The Gryphs only led once in the game – 5-3 at the 2:14 mark of the opening quarter. Algoma’s largest lead was 14 with 1:38 to go in the fourth quarter the Gryphs cut to the final eight-point difference by scoring the final six points of the game.

The result tightened up the battle for the final playoff spot in the West Division. The Laurier Golden Hawks are fifth at 8-12 while the Gryphs are sixth at 6-14. They’re just ahead of a three-way tie for seventh as Algoma, Waterloo Warriors and Western Mustangs are each at 5-15.

All teams in the division have four games to go in their regular seasons. The Gryphs are to play three of theirs at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre as they’re to host the Windsor Lancers (14-6) Friday at 6 p.m., Waterloo Saturday at 6 p.m. and Laurier Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. The other game is against the division-leading McMaster Marauders (17-3) at Hamilton Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
